Bianca Vanessa Andreescu, born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is a Canadian professional tennis player who rose to prominence in 2019. She began playing tennis at the age of seven and trained at the Ontario Racquet Club in Burlington, Ontario. Andreescu attended Thornlea Secondary School in Thornhill, Ontario, before turning professional in 2017.
Andreescu’s impressive performances in 2019 included winning the Indian Wells Masters and reaching the final of the US Open, becoming the first Canadian to do so since 1994. At the age of 18, she made history by defeating Serena Williams in the 2019 US Open final, becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. In the same year, she won the Rogers Cup, making her the first Canadian to win the tournament since 1969. In total, Andreescu has won three WTA singles titles and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in October 2019.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Andreescu won the 2017 US Open junior girls’ singles title and was named WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2019. She received the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s Athlete of the Year in 2019 and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2020.
