Born in 1904 in County Laois, Ireland, he gained prominence for his poetry, especially during the 1930s. As a key member of the Auden/Spender/Day-Lewis group, he was the only one to join and work for the Communist Party. Some of his most well-known works include “A Hope for Poetry” and “The Magnetic Mountain.” Besides poetry, Day-Lewis also authored detective novels under the pen name Nicholas Blake. He received the Hawthornden Prize for Literature and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Other significant works by Day-Lewis are “The Buried Day,” “The Whispering Roots,” and “The Private Wound.” Notably, he served as the Poet Laureate from 1968 until his death in 1972.
