He gained fame for his role as the prison captain in “Birdman of Alcatraz” and appeared in other notable films such as “Shane”, “Paths of Glory”, “The Killing”, “The Sweet Smell of Success”, and “The Twilight Zone”. A politically active individual, Meyer supported the civil rights movement and took part in marches and protests against racial discrimination. He collaborated with organizations like CORE and the NAACP. Meyer passed away at the age of 76 on March 19, 1987, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
