Fanny Brice was a renowned American entertainer, known for her comedic sketches, singing performances, and acting roles. She gained fame in the early 1900s, becoming a top attraction in the vaudeville circuit. Brice’s most notable works include her portrayal of Baby Snooks on radio and her role in the Broadway production of “Ziegfeld Follies.” She also appeared in films such as “The Great Ziegfeld” and “The Ziegfeld Follies,” and was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Brice is still celebrated as one of the greatest comediennes of all time.
In 1968, the biographical musical comedy-drama film “Funny Girl” was released, loosely based on Brice’s life and career. Barbra Streisand starred in the lead role, which catapulted her to stardom. The film was a box office hit, grossing $58.5 million, and led to a 1975 sequel, “Funny Lady.”
Plans for a Broadway revival of “Funny Girl” were announced in 2023, with Beanie Feldstein initially set to star as Fanny Brice. This marked the musical’s first return to Broadway in 58 years. However, Lea Michele was later announced as Feldstein’s replacement in the lead role.
