Henri Philippe Pétain, commonly known as Philippe Pétain or Marshal Pétain, was born on April 24, 1856, and passed away on July 23, 1951. He was a prominent French general who led the French Army during World War I and later became the leader of the collaborationist Vichy France regime from 1940 to 1944 during World War II. Pétain gained recognition for his triumph at the Battle of Verdun in World War I. Additionally, he served as the Vichy Regime’s Ambassador to Spain at the onset of World War II and was appointed vice-premier in May 1940.
