Hideo Nomo, a Japanese former baseball pitcher, played in both Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and Major League Baseball (MLB). He gained initial success in Japan, playing for the Kintetsu Buffaloes from 1990 to 1994. Nomo is renowned for his unique “tornado” pitching windup, high-speed fastball, and outstanding performances in his early MLB career. Throughout his 12-season career, he played for various teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he became the first Japanese-born player to participate in an MLB All-Star Game. In 1995, Nomo was named the National League Rookie of the Year and achieved two no-hitters during his career. Besides his baseball accomplishments, he also served as the torchbearer for the Olympic torch relay at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Notably, Nomo was the first Japanese citizen to join an American major league team after playing professionally in the Japanese major leagues.
