Joseph McCarthy was a prominent Republican U.S. Senator from Wisconsin who served from 1947 until his death in 1957. He rose to prominence in the early 1950s due to his aggressive anti-communist campaign, in which he accused Soviet spies and Communists of infiltrating the U.S. government. This practice of making unsubstantiated allegations of treason or subversion became known as McCarthyism, named after him. Prior to his political career, McCarthy served as a judge at the Wisconsin 10th Judicial Circuit Court, where his decisions were seldom overturned on appeal.
