Julian de Guzman, a retired Canadian soccer player, gained recognition as the first Canadian to participate in La Liga, Spain’s premier soccer league. He played for the Canadian national team and various clubs, including Deportivo La Coruña, FC Dallas, and Ottawa Fury. De Guzman received the Canadian male soccer player of the year award in 2008 and 2009. He also joined Toronto FC as a designated player in Major League Soccer and made history as the first Canadian Designated Player in the league when he signed with the team in September 2009. Furthermore, de Guzman served as captain for both Ottawa Fury FC and Toronto FC.
