Lev Sergeyevich Termen, also known as Leon Theremin, was a renowned Russian inventor who gained fame for creating the theremin, one of the earliest electronic musical instruments and the first to be mass-produced. In addition to this groundbreaking invention, Theremin also played a significant role in the development of early television technology and covert listening devices, or “bugs,” for the Soviet Union. His contributions to Soviet electronic music and the KGB’s bugging technology were notable as well. However, it is lesser-known that Theremin faced imprisonment by Soviet authorities in 1938 and was sent to a Siberian labor camp, only to be released in 1947 and resume his work in electronic music and technology.
