Lester Raymond Brown, known as Les Brown, was an American jazz musician and bandleader born on March 14, 1912. He was famous for leading the big band Les Brown and His Band of Renown for an impressive seven decades, from 1938 to 2000. Brown’s easy swinging dance music style gained popularity with songs such as “Sentimental Journey” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Even though the 1942-44 musicians’ strike hindered their recording, they still managed to produce a hit record with Doris Day as the vocalist in 1945. Additionally, Les Brown and His Band of Renown served as the house band for The Dean Martin Variety Show from 1965 to 1972. Les Brown passed away on January 4, 2001, at 88 years old.
