Omar al-Bashir, born on January 7, 1944, in Hosh Wad Banaqa, Sudan, is a Sudanese military officer who spearheaded a rebellion that toppled the elected government of Sudan in 1989. He held the position of president from 1993 to 2019, during which he was elected three times, although the elections were marred by allegations of fraud. In 1992, al-Bashir established the National Congress Party, which maintained political dominance in the country until his 30-year rule was terminated by a military coup in 2019.
