Walt Disney was an American animator, entrepreneur, and entertainment icon. He is best known for founding the Walt Disney Company, which has become one of the largest and most successful media conglomerates in the world. Disney’s most famous works include the creation of Mickey Mouse and the development of Disneyland and Disney World theme parks. Disney was also involved in producing a number of classic films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, and Cinderella. Other notable achievements include the creation of the Academy Award-winning cartoon series Silly Symphonies and the formation of the first network for children’s television programming, The Disney Channel.
Walt Disney’s parents were Flora and Elias Disney. He was one of five children, four boys and a girl. Walt was noted for his love of drawing from an early age and worked as a commercial illustrator while still in high school. He eventually moved to California and began working in animation, where he was given the nickname “Walt” to avoid confusion with a fellow animator named Walter.
One less known fact about Walt Disney is that he was a major supporter of the space program and was enlisted by President Lyndon B. Johnson to create a television program that would inform the public about the benefits of the space exploration. This program, titled “Man in Space,” aired in 1955 and is credited with helping to build public support for the United States’ space program during the Cold War.
