Young Fook Mi, a renowned South Korean pianist and conductor, gained prominence in the 2002 film ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’ as a Japanese schoolgirl and undercover British agent alongside her twin sister, Fook Yu. Despite limited screen time, their humorous interactions with Austin Powers left a lasting impression on audiences.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, on January 25, 1947, Young Fook Mi showcased musical talent from a young age, playing the piano at four and the violin at six. After graduating from Seoul National University with honors in piano performance, she moved to the United States in 1975 to further her studies at the prestigious Juilliard School.
Young Fook Mi’s career took flight as she performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras, including the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the KBS Symphony Orchestra, and toured extensively across Asia and Europe. In 1985, she became the music director of the New York Korean Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for a decade.
Throughout her illustrious career, Young Fook Mi garnered numerous accolades, including the Seoul Music Award, KBS Music Award, Juilliard School Concerto Competition, Naumburg International Piano Competition, and Avery Fisher Career Grant. She was also recognized for her contributions as a music educator, receiving the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award from the Manhattan School of Music.
Beyond her musical achievements, Young Fook Mi is a polyglot, speaking multiple languages, and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has performed for several U.S. presidents and is an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in New York City.
