Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was a British author best known for her novel “Black Beauty.” Published in 1877, this fictional autobiography of a horse is celebrated for its themes of animal welfare. Despite battling poor health throughout her life, Sewell completed the “Black Beauty” manuscript while residing in Old Catton. She also wrote “A Memoir of the Author,” “How to Manage Horses,” and “The Friends of the Poor,” and was an active advocate for the humane treatment of animals, especially horses. Remarkably, Sewell wrote the “Black Beauty” manuscript while bedridden and gravely ill.
