Denton True “Cy” Young, a legendary American pitcher, played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1890 to 1911. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pitchers of all time, he was the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Young played for five MLB teams and set numerous pitching records, including the most career wins (511) and most innings pitched (7,356). Among his most notable accomplishments are winning five MLB pitching Triple Crowns, pitching three no-hitters, leading the league in win percentage five times, and topping the league in strikeouts twice. Young’s enduring legacy continues to inspire baseball players today.

In addition to his remarkable baseball career, Young owned and operated a successful cattle farm in his hometown of Peoli, Ohio. Despite his fame and fortune, he remained humble and committed to his farming roots, working on his farm during the off-season and generously sharing his produce with fans and neighbors.

The Cy Young Award, established in 1955 after Young’s death, honors his significant contributions to baseball by recognizing the best pitcher in the sport each year. The award has since become one of the most prestigious honors for MLB pitchers. In 2022, Justin Verlander received the AL Cy Young Award for his exceptional season, which included 18 wins and an MLB-best 1.75 ERA. Other notable multiple Cy Young Award winners include Roger Clemens, who holds the record with seven wins, and Pedro Martinez, widely considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
