Dalia Messick, also known as Dale Messick, was an American comic strip artist who gained fame as the creator of the popular adventure comic strip “Brenda Starr, Reporter” in 1940. At its peak, the strip ran in 250 newspapers and followed the thrilling escapades of journalist Brenda Starr for four decades. Messick’s other notable works include “Polly and her Pals,” “The Kid Sister,” “Granny Glamour,” and “Hans and Fritz.” Throughout her career, she received numerous prestigious awards, such as the National Cartoonist Society’s Story Comic Strip Award in 1975 and the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. During World War II, Messick supported the war effort by creating comics for the troops, including a series featuring the character “Colonel Corn” in the military newspaper “Yank.” As America’s first syndicated female cartoonist, Messick was known as the ‘Grand Dame of the Funnies.’
