David Livingstone, a Scottish physician and Christian missionary, gained recognition for his extensive explorations of Africa and his staunch opposition to the African slave trade. His most renowned work, “Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa,” details his experiences and discoveries. Livingstone is also famous for his encounter with journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley, which led to the well-known quote, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” Among his other accomplishments, Livingstone contributed to the establishment of the University of Malawi and was a fervent advocate for Christian missions in Africa. Often referred to as ‘Africa’s Greatest Missionary,’ he played a crucial role in the fight against slavery on the continent.
