Dijon McFarlane, also known as DJ Mustard, is a renowned American record producer, DJ, and songwriter. He rose to fame after producing Tyga’s hit single “Rack City” in 2012 and has since collaborated with various artists, including YG, Ty Dolla Sign, and Rihanna. DJ Mustard has also released solo projects, such as his 2014 album “10 Summers.” Some of his other notable productions include YG’s “My Krazy Life,” Ty Dolla Sign’s “Free TC,” and Rihanna’s “Anti.” In 2015, he received the Producer of the Year award at the BET Hip Hop Awards.
DJ Mustard’s signature sound is characterized by West Coast hip-hop elements, featuring minimalist, bass-heavy beats. He first gained recognition through his collaborations with Tyga and YG, eventually becoming a prominent figure in the genre. Before becoming a full-time producer, DJ Mustard was a hypeman for his close friend and fellow West Coast rapper YG. The two have maintained a strong working relationship, teaming up on numerous tracks over the years. In an interview, DJ Mustard revealed that he hadn’t initially considered a career as a producer, but YG encouraged him to pursue it after listening to some of his early beats.
An interesting aspect of DJ Mustard’s career is his role in popularizing the ‘ratchet’ sound in hip-hop.
