Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) was a renowned Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist, considered one of the most significant musical figures of the 20th century. His extensive body of work, including 15 symphonies and 15 string quartets, spans a wide range of emotions and musical styles. Shostakovich’s most well-known composition is his Fifth Symphony, created in response to the Soviet authorities’ disapproval of his opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Other prominent works include Symphony No. 7 (Leningrad), Piano Concerto No. 1, and his recording of the opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. His music is characterized by its intricate nature and the incorporation of private codes and ciphers. Despite his accomplishments, Shostakovich faced difficulties as an artist in a restrictive state and ultimately succumbed to lung cancer in 1975.
