Douglas Noël Adams (11 March 1952 â 11 May 2001) was an English author, humorist, and screenwriter, most famous for his work on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Initially a 1978 BBC radio comedy, this series evolved into a five-book “trilogy” that sold over 15 million copies during Adams’ life. It was also adapted into a television series, stage plays, a comic book series, a computer game, and a feature film. In addition to this, Adams wrote other novels such as Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and Last Chance to See. He contributed to television and radio shows like Doctor Who and Monty Python’s Flying Circus. A committed environmental activist, Adams received the Friends of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990.
