Dr. John, born as Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., was a renowned American singer, songwriter, and pianist who skillfully combined blues, jazz, funk, and R&B in his music. Throughout his career, he won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Some of his most famous works include the album “Gris-Gris” and the hit song “Right Place, Wrong Time.”
In addition to his solo work, Dr. John collaborated with prominent artists such as Eric Clapton and Neil Young and served as a session musician on numerous records. He received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University and contributed to the soundtrack of the 1977 film “The Last Waltz,” for which he wrote and produced the song “Such a Night.”
Dr. John passed away in 2019 at the age of 77, but his music continues to inspire musicians worldwide. He is remembered as a true icon in American culture and a high priest of funk. Interestingly, Dr. John was once a Catholic schoolboy who transformed himself into a lifelong ambassador of gritty, glittery music.
