Edna May Oliver (November 9, 1883 â November 9, 1942) was a renowned American stage and film actress, recognized for her portrayal of sharp-tongued spinsters. She first gained success on Broadway in 1917 with her role in Jerome Kern’s musical comedy “Oh, Boy!” Throughout the 1930s, Oliver appeared in various films, such as “Little Women,” “Drums Along the Mohawk,” and “David Copperfield.” She also had significant roles in the stage production of “You Can’t Take It with You” and the radio series “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.” Besides her acting career, Oliver was known for her charitable work during World War II. Interestingly, she was a direct descendant of John Quincy Adams, the 6th American president, and had New England ancestry.
