Erich von Stroheim (1885-1957) was a renowned Austrian-American director, screenwriter, actor, and producer, who gained prominence as a visionary film star and avant-garde director during the silent era. He is best remembered for his role in “Sunset Boulevard” and his directorial work on “Greed” and “Foolish Wives,” as well as other notable films such as “Grand Illusion” and “Queen Kelly.” In addition to his film career, von Stroheim was a skilled violinist who performed with several orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, in his younger years.
