George ‘Gabby’ Hayes, born George Francis Hayes on May 7, 1885, was a distinctive American character actor with a gruff voice. He was the most famous sidekick of Western-movie stars in the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in over 200 films throughout his career. Some of his notable works include “The Overland Telegraph” (1929), “In Old Santa Fe” (1934), “Randy Rides Alone” and “Blue Steel” with John Wayne, “The Lone Ranger” (1949-1951 TV series), and “The Roy Rogers Show” (1951-1954 TV series). Hayes also had a successful career in radio and television, earning stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to both mediums. In 1970, he was posthumously inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame.
