Herbert Ross was an American director, producer and choreographer. He was best known for directing the films “The Goodbye Girl” and “Steel Magnolias”, and for producing and choreographing the stage musical “A Chorus Line”. Other notable works include directing “Footloose”, “The Turning Point”, and “Somebody Up There Likes Me”. Ross was a three-time Tony Award nominee and won an Emmy Award for his work on the television series “Laverne & Shirley”.
Herbert Ross was born Herbert David Ross, Jr., but he dropped his first and middle names professionally, going solely by Herbert Ross.
One less known fact about Herbert Ross is that he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received two Purple Hearts for his injuries sustained in combat.
