Hou Hsiao-Hsien, a renowned Taiwanese filmmaker, is celebrated for his work as a director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. As a prominent figure in both world cinema and Taiwan’s New Wave cinema movement, Hou is acclaimed for his visually captivating and emotionally impactful films that explore themes such as memory, history, and cultural identity. Some of his most notable works include “A City of Sadness,” “The Puppetmaster,” “Millennium Mambo,” “Three Times,” “Flight of the Red Balloon,” and “Café Lumière.” Throughout his career, Hou has received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for “The Assassin” (2015). His films have consistently garnered recognition and accolades at esteemed international film festivals, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest living filmmakers and a driving force in Taiwan’s thriving film industry. Remarkably, between 1980 and 1989, seven of the ten films directed by Hou received either best film or best director awards at prestigious international film festivals.
