He gained recognition for his iconic horror films such as Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Whale’s innovative set designs and mastery of elemental horror established a new benchmark for the genre. In addition to his horror films, he directed other notable works like Waterloo Bridge (1931) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Journey’s End (1929). Whale remains a highly influential figure in both the film and theatre industries.
