Jan Rubes, a Czech-born Canadian, was a multifaceted artist known for his work as an actor, musician, and opera singer. He gained prominence through his roles in films such as Witness (1985) and The Elephant Man (1980), as well as television appearances in shows like Due South (1994-1999) and later in ER (2015) and Stargate SG-1 (2000). As a renowned opera singer, Rubes performed with the Canadian Opera Company and was an accomplished cellist, playing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he received the Order of Canada in 1995. Rubes also served as a professor at the University of Toronto and authored two books on opera.
