Jan Bert Lieve Vertonghen, born on 24 April 1987, is a Belgian professional footballer who currently plays as a central defender for Pro League club Anderlecht and the Belgium national team. He started his senior career at Ajax, a Dutch club, in 2006 and held the position of captain from 2011 to 2012. In addition to Ajax, Vertonghen has played for Tottenham Hotspur and Benfica. Known for his versatility, he has played in both defensive and midfield roles throughout his career. Vertonghen has received numerous awards and accolades, such as AFC Ajax Player of the Year in 2011-2012 and Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2012. He has also represented Belgium in the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.
