Joseph Vincent Paterno, commonly known as JoePa, was an American college football player, athletic director, and coach who held the position of head coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 to 2011. As the most victorious coach in NCAA FBS history, Paterno achieved 409 victories and led the team to 37 bowl appearances during his tenure at Pennsylvania State University. However, his legacy was marred by his involvement in a child sex abuse scandal, which resulted in his dismissal in 2011. Paterno passed away in 2012 due to complications from lung cancer.
