John Glenn was a multifaceted American figure, known for his roles as an astronaut, aviator, military pilot, and politician. He gained fame as the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962, as part of the Mercury Seven program, during the historic three-orbit mission aboard the spacecraft Friendship 7. Glenn also had an impressive military career, flying 149 combat missions during World War II and the Korean War.
