Johann August Suter, commonly known as John Sutter, was a Swiss pioneer who played a significant role in the California Gold Rush. He gained fame for founding Sutter’s Mill, where gold was discovered in 1848, igniting the gold rush. Additionally, Sutter established Sutter’s Fort near what is now Sacramento. He was also involved in early California politics and served as a delegate at the 1849 California Constitutional Convention. Furthermore, his Pennsylvania residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
