Jon Voight rose to fame portraying a gigolo in ‘Midnight Cowboy’ (1969). Later on, he held roles as a businessman faced with murder cases in the films ‘Deliverance’ (1972), ‘The Champ’ (1979), and ‘Coming Home’ (1978), which netted him an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Of Slovak ancestry, his surname was originally spelled as Voytka.
In 1993, he replaced Tommy Lee Jones in the TV miniseries, ‘Return to Lonesome Dove’ (1993) as Capt. Woodrow F. Call. Three years after, he was succeeded by Johnny Lee Miller, who in the same year married Voight’s daughter, Angelina Jolie.
