Luciano Pavarotti was one of the finest operatic tenors in the history of music. The professional tenor Arrio Pola discovered he had a perfect voice and trained him for free. Pavarotti debuted in the popular opera ‘La Boheme’ (1961) in Italy. This paved way to his continued success in Yugoslavia, Austria, Ireland, and other European countries. He first performed in America in ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ (1965) but his major breakthrough performance was at the New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1972 where he was given 17 curtain calls.

In 1999, the Guatemalan school for the local civil war orphans called Centro Educativo Pavarotti was named in his honor. He held a charity benefit concert in the country to raise funds for its establishment.

Before he rose to fame, he performed in small towns for free. To support himself, he worked as a part-time teacher and an insurance salesman. The latter gave him the opportunity to learn more about his craft.
