Maria Reynolds (1768-1828) played a central role in America’s inaugural political sex scandal as Alexander Hamilton’s mistress. She gained infamy following the publication of “The Reynolds Pamphlet,” which revealed her extramarital affair with Hamilton. Married to James Reynolds, with whom she had a daughter named Susan, Maria and her husband escaped to Europe after the scandal broke. Upon their return to the United States, they attempted to extort Hamilton using fabricated letters. Maria Reynolds’ participation in this scandal remains her most well-known legacy.
