Mr. Natural, a countercultural comic book character created by Robert Crumb, first emerged in 1967 and gained popularity among the hippie counterculture. As an archetypal guru figure, he offers wisdom and advice to his followers. Some of his most renowned works include co-founding Zap Comix and creating the graphic novel “The Book of Mr. Natural.” Other significant works are “Fritz the Cat,” “Head Comix,” and “Big Ass Comics.” Mr. Natural’s status as a counterculture icon remains influential today.
Interestingly, Mr. Natural was partly inspired by Bob Rudnick, a street person from Crumb’s Cleveland days who shared philosophical aphorisms and New Age ideas. Crumb often considers Rudnick as the “real” Mr. Natural and incorporated some of his thoughts and behaviors into the character.
Although there have been no recent works or accomplishments attributed to Mr. Natural, his impact on the world of comics and his enduring popularity among fans is still significant. As a mystic guru who has renounced the material world, Mr. Natural lives off whatever he can obtain in return for his pearls of wisdom.
