He founded the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), known for its Marxist policies, and served as the Minister of Finance in Sri Lanka’s first government after gaining independence. Perera’s most renowned work is the 10-volume set “Selected works of NM Perera,” which features his economic and political writings. He also contributed to the establishment of the People’s Bank and Bank of Ceylon.

In addition to his political accomplishments, Perera was a multifaceted individual with a love for music and singing. He possessed a pleasant singing voice and was skilled at playing the piano. As a member of the Sri Lankan Trotskyist LSSP, Perera became the first Trotskyist to hold a position in the Sri Lankan cabinet. He served two terms as Minister of Finance and Leader of the Opposition.
