Paul Zimmerman, also known as “Dr. Z,” was a distinguished American sports journalist and author. He gained prominence for his work as a columnist and contributor for Sports Illustrated, where he wrote a weekly column and game predictions, particularly his NFL picks published every week during the NFL season. Zimmerman’s most notable work is “The New Thinking Man’s Guide to Pro Football,” which is regarded as one of the finest books on football ever written. He also contributed to other projects and shows, such as writing for NBC’s NFL broadcasts and regularly contributing to ESPN’s NFL coverage. In 2008, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s writers wing. Besides his football expertise, Zimmerman was a member of the Society for American Baseball Research and authored an article on Willie McCovey for their journal.
