Born Lydia Kamakaeha in 1838, Queen Liliuokalani was the final monarch of Hawaii and a significant figure in the nation’s history. Her reign lasted from January 29, 1891, until the Hawaiian Kingdom’s overthrow on January 17, 1893. Renowned for her opposition to Hawaii’s annexation by the United States, she was also an accomplished musician and composer. Her most famous piece, “Aloha Ê»Oe,” remains a popular Hawaiian song, and she authored numerous other works, including a memoir called “Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen.” Among her accomplishments were the founding of a home for elderly Hawaiians and efforts to enhance the local education system. As the only queen regnant and the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen Liliuokalani was a cherished leader who symbolized hope and determination for the Hawaiian people.
