Mongkut, also known as Rama IV, reigned as the fourth king of Siam from 1851 to 1868. He is renowned for embracing Western influence and initiating significant social and economic reforms in his country. As a scholar, Buddhist monk, and skilled astronomer, King Mongkut observed celestial bodies without the use of telescopes. His most notable work, “Mongkut’s Treatise on Astronomy,” features his observations of a solar eclipse. Additionally, he championed education, agriculture, and established the Royal Barge Procession.
