Robert Wadlow was an American man who became famous for being the tallest person in recorded history. He measured 8 feet 11.1 inches in height at the time of his death at age 22. As a result of his unusual height, he became somewhat of a celebrity and made many public appearances. He was also involved in some movies and shows, including a 1936 film called The Man Mountain and a number of circuses. Despite the challenges he faced due to his size, Wadlow remained a beloved figure and his legacy lives on today.
Robert Wadlow was named after his father, who was also named Robert. His middle name was Pershing, after General John J. Pershing, who was a close family friend. His parents recognized that he was growing at an unusual rate when he was a young child, and he was eventually diagnosed with hyperplasia of the pituitary gland, which caused him to continue growing well into adulthood. Despite his size, he was known for his gentle, kind nature and his willingness to interact with the public.
One less known fact about Robert Wadlow is that he wore a size 37 shoe, which measures 18.5 inches in length. He required custom-made footwear for his entire life, and his shoes are now on display at the Alton Museum of History and Art in Illinois. Wadlow’s feet were also unusually wide, requiring him to wear braces to support his weight and prevent his ankles from rolling inward. Despite the challenges he faced due to his size, he remained a beloved figure who continues to fascinate people even decades after his death.
