Sheila James Kuehl, an American politician, former actress, and LGBTQ+ rights advocate, made history as the first openly gay or lesbian individual elected to the California Legislature. Throughout her 14-year tenure, she championed LGBT rights and environmental legislation. Kuehl also worked as a professor at Loyola Law School and co-founded the Public Policy Institute of California. Besides her political career, she appeared in TV shows and movies such as “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” and “Zorro.” Currently, Kuehl serves as a Los Angeles County Supervisor and participates in the Climate Resolve environmental nonprofit organization. Notably, she gained popularity as a comedienne in the late 50s and early 60s for her portrayals of tomboyish kid sisters and boy-crazy high schoolers on TV.
