Shimon Peres, an influential Israeli politician and statesman, is renowned for his significant role in negotiating the 1993 Oslo Accords, which led to the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. He served as Israel’s Prime Minister twice and as President from 2007 to 2014. Peres was also instrumental in the development of Israel’s defense and nuclear programs, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. Among his other accomplishments are founding the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, authoring over 15 books, and receiving numerous awards and honorary degrees worldwide.
Peres and his family immigrated to Palestine in 1934, and he joined the Haganah movement in 1947. After Israel gained independence in 1948, he became the head of Israel’s navy at just 24 years old. Peres remained an active figure in Israeli politics and consistently worked towards peace in the region until his passing in 2016.
