Shoko Asahara, originally named Chizuo Matsumoto, was the notorious founder and leader of Aum Shinrikyo, a Japanese doomsday cult. He became infamous for orchestrating the lethal 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo’s subway system, which resulted in 13 deaths and thousands of injuries.
