He rose to fame in the 1930s and 1940s, featuring in over 50 films throughout his career, including prominent roles in “The Mouthpiece” (1931) as gangster boss Rico and as detective Philo Vance in a series of mystery films. Other significant works include “The Case of the Howling Dog,” “The Match King,” “One Hour with You,” and “Gold Diggers of 1933.” William remains a cherished figure in American cinema.

Besides his acting career, William was also a skilled painter. He began painting as a hobby in the 1920s and eventually became proficient enough to have his artwork displayed in galleries.
