Wilbert Vere Awdry OBE (15 June 1911 รขย€ย“ 21 March 1997), often credited as Rev. W. Awdry, was an English Anglican minister, railway enthusiast, and children’s author. He is best remembered for creating Thomas the Tank Engine and numerous other characters in his Railway Series. Awdry initially invented these characters and stories in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. His Railway Series books, featuring Thomas the Tank Engine, were published starting in 1945. Awdry’s work gained immense popularity, eventually leading to the beloved children’s TV series, Thomas and Friends. In recognition of his contributions to children’s literature, Awdry received an Order of the British Empire honor in 1996.
